Should I Add Consultants to My Customer Group?

So the topic for today’s blog post – “Should I add my downline and other Consultants to my VIP Customer Group?”

I will be honest, this is a question that will get you a lot of different opinions when asked in a group of leaders, but I am going to share my thoughts and then why I think that way.

If you follow me on Social Media, you know that I was in Las Vegas last weekend with CinchShare’s W.I.L.D Retreat (Women in Leadership Development). It was a training weekend for Leaders and CinchShare knocked it out of the park. They invited amazing speakers  to present, including yours truly! I loved the workshop style of the event and the time allotted to put the learnings into practice.

The event was so eye-opening for me as I saw the needs of leaders and heard the areas they were struggling in. It really helped me to get even more clarity on what leaders in the field need and how I could help them. Over the next few months, I plan to take one blog post a month to really dive deep into some of those struggles that Leaders have.  If you have something you would like to see me address here in the blog, please let me know in the comments below and I will do my best to make it happen.

But back to our topic… – “Should I add my downline and other Consultants to my VIP Customer Group?”

I personally do not think you should add your downline, upline or other Consultants to your VIP Customer Group. The purpose of the group is to have a place of communication for your customers and potential customers. I want you to dig deep and really think about WHY you have added those Consultants to your group.

For some leaders, they say it is to “share” what you are doing with those Consultants so they can go do the same thing in their customer group, right? Well, in my eyes, I see that as enabling my Consultants, not equipping or empowering them. One of the most important things I believe I need to teach my Consultants is to take control of their business and work it as a business from day one. I am all about giving them tools to use to learn the ropes of the business, but I am careful not to be the mama bird going out and getting their food, bringing it back to the nest and literally feeding it to them. If you are always feeding them (literally from your mouth to theirs), they will never leave the nest, and why would they ever want to?

I do not want to create a nest of birds on my team that are dependent on me to give them everything or they can’t function; I want to mentor them and teach them to build their own business. To leave the nest and have their businesses take flight. My job as a leader is to equip, empower and grow my Consultants. And then mentor them to do the same with their Consultants. My Consultants do not lack the flow of information, encouragement or communication. I still give them everything they need and then some, but they are not members of my Customer Group, they don’t need to be.

Teach them to fly…

I keep my Customer Group closed to any of my downline Consultants. It is truly just me and my customers inside my group. I want to converse and build authentic relationships with those customers, just me and them.  But I do SHARE what I am doing in my Customer Group with my team often.

I take screenshots of conversations or posts and upload them to my team group to give them ideas of what I am going, and what is working for me. By sharing a screenshot, they can take the idea and make it their own, without copying and pasting my exact verbiage or images. I use the screenshots to inspire them and get them thinking about what would work in their Customer Group. I also post just about everything I do in my customer group ON our team page. So they can go do it themselves. Therefore, there’s no real need for them to be in my group.

I also try to keep my Customer Group closed to other Consultants and Leaders outside of my team. While I do not feel competitive with other Consultants and Leaders, this is a business and I am working hard to build something BIG for my family.  I am ready to sell to, book, and recruit anyone that wants to do business with me. Adding outsiders to my customer group just creates a tangled web that I do not think is healthy for my business.

If you do have downline consultants in your group (or other Consultants/Leaders) that is entirely your choice. But I will ask that you stop for a minute and really think about WHY you have them in there. What is the intended purpose? Is it working? Is it what is best for your Consultants? Is it helping them to stand up and OWN their business as a business? How are you equipping and empowering them by allowing them to be group members? If you answered positively to all of those, that is awesome and you should continue what you are doing. If you can’t answer positively to all of those, it might be time to consider a change.

Some people say they having other consultants in their group because they “like” and comment on posts and that helps boost views. So what you’re saying, is you don’t want an accurate account of what’s working and not working in your customer group. Because you will never know. And don’t even get me started on the fact that people take your posts and reuse them over and over. And that’s how we end up in Facebook jail, right?

Remember, your job as a leader is to equip, empower, and encourage your Consultants to grow a strong and sustainable business and to mentor them to success in that business. How is that going for you?!

4 Tips to Uncomplicate Your Leadership Role in Direct Sales

1. Lead From the Front:

You cannot expect your team to do things YOU are not doing. So lead from the front! Set goals in your own business and SHOW your team what you’re doing! You should be posting a minimum of TWO times a day in your team page. What kinds of things?

  1. Company updates
  2. Company incentives
  3. Resources
  4. Trainings
  5. And what YOU are doing

It’s really quite easy to lead from the front when you are actually working everyday. Making hostess packets? Post a picture on your team page! Just had a recruiting conversation? Snap a pic and post it to your team. Give them the WORDS. And show them you’re getting results because you’re working.

2. Trainings Don’t Have to be Hard:

In fact, they don’t have to be from YOU at all! Do you know how many trainings are already out there? You don’t have to come up with the trainings, it’s simply your job to make sure they have access to them!

Find people who inspire you. Follow them on Facebook and their blog. Google! It’s your best friend!

And here’s a couple of sites that have trainings and tips already laid out for you to SHARE with your team!

And those events can be shared, and your team can go back through all of that great information at ANY TIME! And you know what? They hold WEEKLY live Facebook trainings from experts in the field. So you can invite your team to a new training every single week! When I realized this, it was a huge relief to me. I don’t have to come up with all that on my own!

3. Keep it Positive and Set the Pace:

Set the TONE for your team. Don’t know where to start?

Use the description on your team page to set the expectation for the team. A place to encourage and lift eachother up. To share ideas and celebrate our team members. Do they KNOW what you want? Have you ever told them your vision for your team? It’s kind of important.

Then set the rules. Monthly, I post the same post. It talks about the rules of the page. No complaining, no selling, and be nice. That’s the gist of it. But it’s long and detailed and I give them instructions on how to word their feelings if they are frustrated. And the chain of contact to actually vent those frustrations and get results, privately, in a message to their upline. They don’t know if you don’t TELL them.

And third, you better STICK TO IT. No excuses. Delete any posts that violate this and send a personal and thoughtful message with a positive tone, to anyone who goes against that. You might get some resistance at first, but after that, you will have the positive, working environment you crave. And your team members will be happy you did it! There is NO place for negativity on a team page.

4. Schedule Your Time:

Time blocking is essential to leadership…and your business truthfully. Consistency is the key to leadership. Simply showing up no matter what.

You should have at LEAST 20 minutes a day to work on your personal business and 20 minutes a day to work on your team.


Monday: contact all new consultants who have joined in the last week, or even the last few months. Send out new consultant letters/email/packets

Tuesday: Training. Share some kind of training, remember, doesn’t have to be yours!

Wednesday: Celebrate earners, promotions, new consultant goals/programs, company incentives, whatever it may be

Thursday: connect with your upcoming leaders. Doesn’t mean they have to have a title. Some of my best leaders don’t have a title yet to prove it. CONNECT

Friday: Plan of action. Give them something to DO. And the steps to do it. Let’s all make these hostess packets. Let’s all connect with 5 past hostesses this weekend.

See…it doesn’t have to be hard. We’re not all born leaders. I know I wasn’t. I had to work hard at figuring all this out. And work harder to realize that…I was making it too complicated. It’s not. So don’t make it be!

If you’re not using hashtags, people really don’t have a way to FIND what you’re posting.

And it’s great to have a theme each day. Why? Because that’s what everyone else is doing! And the idea of Instagram and Hashtags is to find people who have similar interests.

One Week of Simplifying Your Thirty-One Business-Part 3

This week we’re talking about simplifying your Thirty-One business to increase your success.

We’re talking about assessing your last fiscal year in order to improve your NEW fiscal year.

A great quote I saw:

If you don’t crunch some #’s and look at what worked, and what didn’t work…you don’t have the tools to move forward and make progress.

One thing I learned from last year, is that I can’t do it all.

And neither can you.

I learn a certain way. And I teach a certain way. Not everyone relates to the way I think and teach. I’m really not built to be an emotional creature. I’m more of a workhorse. I’m the person you come to in order to fix something.

But our team needs a variety of people to learn from, as do I. There’s so many great leaders out there. And by leader, I don’t speak in titles. I don’t believe titles define your leadership skills. But there are other people out there that our team needs to hear from. I am not the end all. NO ONE is but the Man above. And a leader who makes you feel otherwise is not after your own good, they’re looking out for bettering themselves. You should always be seeking new ways to learn, new people to learn from, and you should ALWAYS be learning. Period.

So this past year I brought on a whole team of people I trust. I had other leaders doing calls for our team. And in turn, I agreed to train their team.

We also started doing GROUP trainings with other leaders. We would make a group on Facebook and collaborate. Either, someone would do the whole training for all of our teams together, or we worked together on the whole training and invited all of our teams. I’ve LEARNED so much from all of this. We even did a 10 week leadership training and combined our teams for it.

It saved me time, it saved me energy, it gave our team a new voice to hear, and new ideas to hear. It really transformed the dynamics of our team. And you know what happens when YOU share with others? Others share with YOU. We simply have this amazing network of friendships and teams now. And I’m so grateful for all the doors we’ve opened this past year.

So my advice to you today: Stop thinking you have to do it all. Find others you trust.

If you’re a consultant…post on pages looking for other leaders. I went on Facebook about 6 years ago and asked if there were any other leaders out there willing to meet with me to share ideas. I found my best buddy Melanie Moore who wasn’t even with my company. To do this day, she is one of my most valued friendships. You don’t have to do this alone. But you have to be willing to work hard enough to find someone willing to do this with you.

If you’re a Director…simply ask. Thirty-One is a different breed of sisterhood. You will find someone who will work with you. You will find some who fit, and some who don’t. But I promise you will make friends. I promise you have something someone can benefit from. We all do. And you will find someone who will benefit YOU. And the friendships you will make in the process will become lifelong friends.

Open the door today. Open the door to possibilities you didn’t even know existed…by taking some of the burden off yourself and working together the way God intended us to do so. He gave us all talents. Together…we can accomplish amazing things:)

Just this week…Sabrina Hayes from Georgia rescued me from Facebook Jail and hosted a training I had planned for our team. And Tanya Wezensky from Michigan met with a new consultant of mine all the way in Michigan to help her with her launch party. Christina Rupracht in New York, she talks me off the ledge regularly and I love her to pieces. Marta Guinn in Indiana, just keeps me smiling:) Tiffany Wellinghoff is close to me. And frequently saves my butt from all kinds of things. HA! This sisterhood we are a part of, it’s truly amazing. And you should explore the wonderful world of Thirty-One people that spans across the entire United States. With technology these days…miles are no boundary. Friendships come near and far! Reach out for some support this year with your goals. You’ll be glad you did!

Weekly Tip for Your Direct Sales Business

Using your time efficiently is the best tip I can give you in your direct sales business. And there are many ways to do that, but here are a couple of my favorites:


1. Save all of your hostess information in your phone.

The next time you’re stuck by train, message your hostesses and ask how they’re doing.

The next time you’re waiting to pick up your son from basketball, message your hostesses and ask them where they’re standing on orders and if they need any extra supplies to help them.

The next time you’re sitting at a doctor’s office waiting to be seen, message your hostesses and let them know what time you’ll arrive and what kind of guests will be attending. Moms, nurses, teachers? This will help you gear your presentation to help them.

Of course, there’s a thousand thing you can do in 5 minutes, but make your hostess coaching a priority and use your time efficiently and it won’t be such a burden to get things done. We spend half our time “waiting” for something. DO SOMETHING while you’re waiting that will benefit your business.

**Also, save your contacts for your business separately. For instance, I believe Gretchen Manmiller shared this with many moons ago. I save all my Thirty-One customers as 31Sally Johnson. So when i have a few minutes, i can go through my contacts in my phone, type in “31” and all my customers pop up. I can scroll down the list and message 3 people:

~”hey Sally! I was sitting here thinking about your party. Someone said something that made me laugh and think about you today! And then I thought, has she seen the new fall catalog? And then I thought, oh my goodness! I need to get her one! Want me to send you one out? And how is your mom doing? I saw on FB she just had surgery?”

It is literally THAT simple. Use those 5 minutes to build your relationships and you will build your business. You have to have a CEO (Chief Executive Officer) mentality when it comes to running your business. Cause you ARE! No one else is going to run your business for you. Ask yourself if you’re really doing all you can do, and then see how you can do it more efficiently.

2. Invest in a good Bluetooth headset and at least 30 minutes, 3 times a week.

Yes, I’m telling you to walk around with that stupid thing in your ear for 30 minutes a day (or at least 3 times a week). My husband makes fun of me when I have it on. LOL. Now I’m going to get really insane and tell you to wake up 30 minutes earlier 3 times a week and go for an early morning walk before the birds (and everyone in your house) wakes up.

There are a million books out there that will change your life. I get up at 5am every morning, brush my teeth, make my energy drink, put my bluetooth headset on, and walk out the door. And I listen to an AUDIO book while I’m walking. I’m ALWAYS learning something new. I’m always feeding my soul, my business, and my drive with some amazing information. And by walking in the morning…I simply feel better. I’m more productive and ready to take on my day with a great attitude and perspective from something I learned in whatever book I’m “reading” that day.

I have an iPhone, so I simply go to my iTunes store, find a book I want, and download the audio and away I go. I can easily “read” one book a week. Have a 30 minute commute to work everyday? LISTEN to your book on the way. Utilize the precious time you DO have…and you’ll start to see things change!

I’ve had 3 or 4 different brands. And I personally like Jabra the best. When looking for a bluetooth set, there are tons of options. The most important thing is it has to say that you can listen to MUSIC. Because some will only take calls. And then you wouldn’t be able to listen to your books! Here’s one for $37 on amazon. Monday Tip for Your Thirty-One Business

1) Go to all your hostesses from January 2014-NOW.

2) Go to their Facebook page, find a post and COMMENT something meaningful on one of their pictures. Or maybe you can send them a quick text and let them know you were thinking of them.

**I’m doing all my home shows today. Catalog parties tomorrow. And fundraisers Wednesday. Because building relationships is one thing we often forget. Are your customers forgetting about YOU? What can you do to create some dialogue and just say hello to someone today?

**This has nothing to do with booking a party. This is simply saying, “hello. You matter to me”.

4 Services You Will Eventually Need in Your Direct Sales Business

4 Services you will eventually need in your direct sales business if you continue to push the envelope, your business continues to grow, and you’re seeming overwhelmed.

Let me just say first…I gain nothing from these 4 recommendations. The reason I am telling you about these 4 services is because I appreciate things and people who make my life easier. I appreciate good people with good intentions to share their gifts in a way to lift others up. These are 4 instances that I have personally come across with…in business and in person. In order for me to recommend something or someone, it takes a tall order and an insane amount of trust. I do not hand them out lightly. These people and businesses have touched my life. And I know they can touch yours.

You may not use these people or companies in particular. But my hope is that you recognize and give yourself permission to seek these services out when you get to the point that you are feeling overwhelmed. An NED with Thirty-One reached out to me recently and gave ME permission to spend more on help. She said someone once told her…if more money does not give you more TIME…then it’s not worth it. Now I probably just totally butchered what she said and her exact words…but it resonated with me. So I gave myself permission to delegate more tasks to people who are insanely capable of my high standards for my own business. So again, I simply want to give you permission to reach out for help when you get to that point.

These are 4 things that have moved my business to the next level. And I’m going to bore you to death explaining each one. And the ways each one changed my life.

Now I will be 100% honest with you and let you know I have never paid for an outside coach. But I have always had one with Thirty-One. Who gets your personality and your life and is REAL. And GENUINE. And they’ll be worth every penny. As soon as I get a handle on this fall, I will personally be taking on some coaching with Angilee. Because I’m ready to get to the next level in my own business. And I know she can help me do that.

2. Virtual Assistant:

First of all, what is a virtual assistant and why would you need one? And when would you need one? And how would you find one? I simply want to help you understand a little more of my world. You all see me doing amazing things in my business, but I’ve never really laid it all out there. I have help. I have chosen a path of serving others. Of serving my team. And that passion takes a lot of my time. So in order to do that, I had to have help. I am blessed with two amazing assistants. And I also have my team newsletters done through a newsletter service.

One…is not for hire:) Her name is Brenda. And that poor woman has enough to handle with me. I recently decided to unload A LOT of work on Brenda. Why? Because I was drowning. I maintained my business with minimal services from my virtual assistants for a long time. But in this past year, my PV (personal sales volume) has doubled. And my team hit million dollar team (because they’re awesome like that). And I made PAC (Presidential Advisory Council). And my amount of home parties and hostesses has doubled or really tripled. But in all that success, I was slipping. I was missing things. I was dropping the ball. And I was miserable in all my success. And then that NED gave me permission to use my profits to give me more time to do the things I am so passionate about. To do the things that only I can do. And it is not easy giving up control. But man was it worth it. Brenda is good people. And a good friend. It’s amazing how God brings people into your life that you could never do without. She helps me run my personal business while I concentrate on our amazing team.

Now, Jackie Abrams is also an assistant of mine. And dear friend. We have been friends for about 7 years I think? This poor woman lives about 5 blocks from me. And she was my main assistant for years! Then she began her own career as a full-time virtual assistant. Jackie is simply what I call “good people”. And that’s a pretty elite group in my world. Not many people get that “token” 😉

So anyways! Jackie has a client base where she runs various tasks for people all over the country. What does she do for me?

She makes and sends hostess packets. I book a party, I email her and say here ya go, and she puts it together and mails it. She sends my happy mail and my birthday club post cards each month now too. And she rescues me when I’m drowning with just about anything. She knows this business inside and out and can help in so many ways.

But how do you know when you need an assistant?

~When you’re miserable. when you’re dropping the ball and missing things that you shouldn’t be. When your team is getting left behind because you can’t keep up with your own business. Or maybe you just want to step your business up a little. Relieve some of the work you do, so you can step things up a notch on recruiting and sales and booking. I was ok managing 6-10 parties a month. Once I started hitting more…I could not keep up personally. And maybe some women can. But I cannot. I work on too many other projects that require my time also. Not to mention my 5 kids and my husband who would all like to see their mother/wife every now and then:)

And what can they do for you?

Anything that doesn’t require personal attention. Hostess packets, invitations, newsletters, stats, surveys, emails, scheduling things, flyers, events, labeling catalogs, going to the post office, mailing things…these are things that can be done by someone else. YOU need to be doing things in your business that will result in booking, recruiting, and sales. And those things require your personal attention. If you’re so busy dealing with things that could be done by someone else, that you’re dropping the ball…it’s time to get an assistant.

Or maybe you’re simply not consistent. Find someone who is GOOD at organization and a good assistant will whip you into to shape and make you like like a million bucks;)

How do you go about finding one?

You ASK. I found Jackie by asking my friends and my team. I found Brenda by asking my friends and my team. And I couldn’t live without either one of them at this point. And if they can put up with me, they’re worth their weight in gold;) Some can come to your house if you want them to, others can work completely online. You simply ship them the materials they need to support your business. Maybe you could start delegating tasks like hostess packets and labeling catalogs to an older child of yours, a local teenager, or a family member. Whatever you do, I promise you’ll be glad they helped get you on track.

How much are you going to pay for a virtual assistant?

It depends entirely on what you need. They go by services. My advice to you is to start SMALL. Take one task and find someone to help. And then as you feel comfortable and build that trust and relationship, you can add more. You would be very surprised to find how affordable good help is. I encourage you to look into it when you start to feel like you are drowning.

3. Graphic and Flyer Designs:

You know…I’m not too bad at graphics. I can make what I need. But it takes me FOREVER. And it’s never as good as someone who does this for a living or holds this God-given talent. I can assure I do not hold that talent from God. I was not blessed with it. I’ve had to research and trial and error SO much. And I wasted a lot of time.

My dear friend and team-mate Bridgett Edwards is a Godsend. She is an amazing graphic designer who helps our team beyond anything I can ever repay. But she also works. And has a family. And a life. LOL!

So I made the decision to start shipping this task out. I found someone who I like, I trust, and I can give them a chicken scratch idea and they get my scribbles and my brain. Kim from Night Owl Custom Design is affordable, reliable, and well worth her weight in gold to me.

I can send her an idea for a label and it costs me $8. $8 for a label that i need right away. That i would spend hours doing myself and it still wouldn’t look half as good as hers when i was done. So why waste my time? Why not support another woman owned business? it’s a smart investment. Work smarter. Not harder. She can literally do anything with designs. Post cards, business cards, flyers, you name…she can do it.

So go check out her page and stop beating yourself up and making the EXCUSE that you don’t have cute stuff. Cause you CAN. And it’s affordable. She makes people look GOOD:

4. Social Media Scheduling:

If you are doing Facebook parties and posts to twitter and Facebook and your team pages and customer pages…and the list goes on and on…you NEED to be on CinchShare.com

This site allows you to schedule posts to your social media sites on YOUR TIME. I can schedule 15 Facebook parties in ONE setting. One post can go to 15 parties. You schedule the time and the date. And it posts for you. This site is truly a Godsend to my business. I can be eating dinner, or on vacation, or outside with my babies while Facebook parties are going on and making me $$$. There’s nothing more golden than time, right? Well, cinchshare gives you that time. It allows you to work on YOUR time.

And when I first started using it, I emailed the “help me” button simply to say THANK YOU. I feel in love immediately with the ease and burden it took off of me. And I quickly built a business relationship with a couple of the founders because they’re simply those “good people” I keep telling you about. They’re women entrepreneurs who were in this business and saw a NEED and answered it. And they’re rock solid. I have NEVER had a problem with this site. And it just keeps getting better and better. I highly encourage you to take a look at it and see what it can do for you.

Ask a Thirty-One Director Anything!

I gave my team a survey and told them they could anonymously ask me ANYTHING they wanted, bar none!

They came up with some really great questions and I made a video for them. I think we will do this once a month. I really want them to know who I am. To let them know my own personal struggles and triumphs. And let them know I’m real! When we have team members all over the country, it’s a great way for them to see and hear me in a sincere and vulnerable way. I LOVED answering these questions and just being able to be myself and answer them!

Some of the questions they asked were:
~ Do I hire outside help for cleaning, cooking, childcare, etc.
~ Do I really make an average of $10,000 a month and HOW
~ Do I sleep?
~ What is my daily routine. “you seem to have it all together. How do you find time to cook, clean, take care of kids?”
~ Do you think you’ll ever NOT make money off of 31?
~ I’m scared to do a home show because there’s no consultants near me to ask questions, what should i do?
~ When did you realize 31 was taking you places you never dreamed?

It’s time to hit the reset button, time to jumpstart your Thirty-One business, time to set goals, time to assess the last fiscal year, and time to kick some TAIL in the next one!
